The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden recently welcomed a 14-year-old female giraffe to its animal family as part of a breeding recommendation for the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s (AZA) Giraffe Species Survival Plan (SSP). Solstice, whose name is significant with her birthday, December 21, 2008, the date marking the winter solstice that year, arrived at the OKC Zoo from the Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Caretakers shared that she is settling well and becoming familiar with her new surroundings and herd mates. In the future, Solstice will be paired with the Zoo’s male giraffe, Demetri, 6, as part of this breeding program.
