Wewoka Tigers Win Battle of Highway 270 at Home Tuesday
The Wewoka Tigers started off their basketball season at home Tuesday night and hosted the Holdenville Wolverines for the Batlle of Highway 270 Rivalry.
The Lady Tigers started the evening off showing the Lady Wolverines they were here to play. Lady Tiger Aubrey Alexander knocked down a three-point shot to fire up the home crowd.
The Lady Wolverines went on a 11-8 run in the first. Wewoka fought back on defense and held Holdenville to 5 points scored in the second.
The Lady Tigers’ offense applied some pressure with Heavenli Hill scoring four points and Riley Julian scoring three to take the lead at the half.
Holdenville was only down by one point heading into the third quarter.
The Lady Wolverines went back on offense and regained the lead with eleven points scored in the quarter.
Now, the Lady Tigers were down by two points heading into the final quarter with the crowd from both sides, on their feet.
The Wewoka Lady Tigers put together a game plan of both offense and defensive pressure to overtake the Lady Wolverines.
The game went down to the wire as it was tied with just 40 seconds left.
Lady Tiger were fouled in the last seconds and scored some free throw points to help the Wewoka Lady Tigers win the battle 43-38.
Leading the way for the Lady Tigers was Heisel Sanchez with 13 points and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Heavenli Hill had 11 points, one trey and was two of two from the line.
Aubrey Alexander had 9 points, one trey and was 4 of 9 from the line.
The Wewoka Tigers hit the court next to protect their home field against the Holdenville Wolverines.
The Tigers started out fast and jumped out to an early lead over the Wolverines. Wewoka’s Bill Stephens scored 7 points to help the Tigers go on a 12-7 run.
Holdenville stepped up their offense in the second and scored 17 points to close the gap, but the Tigers added extra pressure on offense with Mike Piza scoring eight points to help keep the Tigers ahead.
The Wolverines were down by 11 points heading into the third quarter.
Both teams battled it out in the third frame as each team scored 20 points each.
Holdenville had big spurts of a comeback chance, but the Tigers shot that down with plays that kept the Wolverines from closing in.
Holdenville scored 20 points to Wewoka’s 16 in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to tie or win the game.
The Wewoka Tigers won both Battles of Highway 270 with a final score of the boy’s game 72-63.
Leading the way for the Tigers was Mike Piza with 28 points, one trey and was 13 of 16 from the line.
Bill Stephens had 15 points, two treys and was one of one from the line.
Ladarius Woods had 14 points and two treys.
Next up for the Tigers is this Friday at home against Silo.
The game will start at 4 p.m. with the JV starting first followed by the Lady Tigers then the Tiger boys.
