Varnum Wins on the Road at Strother Friday

The Varnum Whippets traveled to Yellowjacket territory Friday to take on Strother in some baseball action.

Friday was a day that started out nice but got colder as the day went on. By game time, the temperature was approximately 60 degrees and dropping plus there was the wind.

The Varnum Whippets went to bat first and took the early lead when Devyn Fullbright scored on a wild pitch. The Yellowjackets answered right back at the bottom of the inning with Peyton Moody scoring on a ground ball.

The game was tied up at the top of the second inning. Varnum went back on offense and dominated the inning with eight runs with Chance Winsett scored on an error, Brayden Goodwin scored on a fly ball, Jon Madkins scored on an error, Fullbright scored on a fly ball, Aiden Cooper scored on a line drive, Ben Suarez and Weston Lusk scored on a ground ball, Winsett scored on a ground ball.

The Yellowjackets lit up the scoreboard at the bottom of the second when Jakob Douthit scored on a line drive and Carson Dunn scored on a walk.

Varnum extended their lead by a single run in the third with Ryan Poull scoring on a walk.

Strother struggled on offense at the bottom of the third and went scoreless.

The Whippets went back to work on offense and hammered in six more runs in the fourth with Cooper and Fullbright scoring on a fly ball, Poull scored on a walk and Winsett, Troy Davis and Suarez scored on a line drive to put the game out of reach.

The Yellowjackets could not regain their momentum and went three and out in the frame.

The game was called in the fifth with the visiting Varnum Whippets winning 16-3.

Pitching for the Yellowjackets was Mylam DeFries who pitched three innings, allowing ten runs, walking six and striking out two.

Peyton Moody pitched one inning, allowing one run, no walks and striking out one.

Pitching for Varnum was Ryan Poull who pitched two innings, allowing zero runs, zero walks and striking out six.

Brenden Poull pitched one inning, allowing three runs, four walks and striking out two.

Next up for both Strother and Varnum is the LRC Baseball Tournament on April 2-4. The tournament will have two sites at Varnum and Moss High Schools.

Strother will start off on Thursday the 2nd at Varnum taking on the New Lima Falcons at 2 p.m.

Varnum will start off facing the winner of the Bowlegs and Mason game on Thursday at Varnum at 6:30 p.m.
