Varnum Whippets, Lady Whippets Regional Champions

Varnum hosted their Regional Playoffs last week and took on Crowder and Crossover Prep for their Championships on Saturday.

The Lady Whippets beat Union City on Tuesday by one point with a final score of 38-37 to advance to the championship game against Crowder on Saturday.

The Lady Whippets jumped out to an early lead by Ashlyn White-Richards and Makayla Louie finding their three-point range and Makiyah Coker scoring six points from the field to help the Lady Whippets go on a 14-6 run after the first quarter.

In the second, the Crowder Lady Demons tried to close the gap with 9 more points scored and holding Varnum to 10 points scored but were still behind at the end of the frame.

The Lady Demons were down by 14 points heading into the third quarter.

Although Lady Whippets were ahead, they went on the offense attack in the second half and attacked the board in the third and extended their lead.

The Lady Demons needed a huge rally to make some type of comeback in the fourth quarter. The Lady Whippets defense stopped that from happening by holding them to just 6 points scored. The offense continued with there momentum and put the game more out of reach by finding threepoint range again in the fourth with four treys to stroll in and win the Class B-I Regional Championship with a final score of 59-30.

Leading the way for the Lady Whippets was Ashlyn White-Richards with 14 points, two treys, three assists, three rebounds, three steals and was two of four from the free throw line.

Alyviah Lena scored 13 points, three treys, five assists, two rebounds, three steals and was two for two from the line.

Makiyah Coker scored 10 points, two assists, 13 rebounds, one steal and was to four of four from the line.

The Varnum Whippets boys had defeated Union City on Tuesday with a final score of 78-67 to face the Crossover Prep Lions on Saturday for the Regional Championship.

Just like the Lady Whippets, the Varnum boys took control of their game early with Daison Hadley knocking down two three-point shots and Jon Madkins scoring 8 points to put the Whippets up by nine points at the end of the frame.

The defense of the Lions showed up in the second and held the Whippets to 13 points and tried to take the opportunity to close the gap but the Whippets still had control at the break.

The visiting Lions were down by six points heading into the third quarter.

The visiting Lions were determined not to be defeated and rallied back not only to tie the game but go up by one to take the lead at the end of the third.

Varnum was down by one and headed into the final quarter for the championship. The Lions tried to rally back and fouled the Whippets to keep time on the clock, but the game didn’t go Crossover’s way. Varnum went 9 of 12 from the line and went on a 20-17 run to win the Regional Championship with a final score of 68-67.

Leading the way for the Whippets was Daison Hadley with 28 points, two treys, two assists, five rebounds, one steal and was eight of eight from the free throw line.

Jon Madkins scored 24 points, one assist, 13 rebounds, one block and was six of seven from the line.

Varnum now moves on to Area at Prague.

The Varnum Lady Whippets will play Kiowa Friday at 6 p.m. The Varnum Whippets will play Binger-Oney Friday at 7:30 p.m.
