Varnum Whippets Get Double Wins Tuesday at Home
The Varnum Whippets and the Lady Whippets hosted their second home game Tuesday evening against the Roff Tigers.
Tuesday night was the third game of the season for Varnum and the Whippets and Lady Whippets are undefeated so far with wins over Mason and Earlsboro.
The Lady Whippets started the evening off against the Lady Tigers. Varnum wasted no time on taking the lead. Miley Wildcat scored 6 points from the field and Makayla Lowe and Ashlyn Richards each knocked down a three-point shot to go on a 15-4 run in the first quarter.
The Lady Tigers fired back in the second quarter and closed the gap with 13 points scored. The Lady Whippets also scored 13 points in the frame.
Varnum had a 28-17 lead heading into the third quarter. Alyviah Lena, Faith Madkins and Lowe helped the Lady Whippets go on a 12-7 run in the quarter.
The Varnum Lady Whippets controlled the second half and cruised in for the win in the final frame, going 13-8 to win at home with a final score of 53 – 32.
Leading for Varnum was Faith Madkins with 11 points. Madkins was 5 of 9 from the free throw line.
Makayla Lowe had 10 points with two treys and was 2 for 2 from the line.
Makiyah Coker and Miley Wildcat both scored 6 points each on the evening.
Next up, the Varnum Whippets hit the court.
The first quarter was a tough battle for both teams. The Whippets just edged out the Tigers 10-9 in the first frame.
The Tigers found their three-point range in the second and knocked down four three-point shots to outscore the Whippets 16-13.
Varnum was behind by 2-points heading into the third quarter.
Head Coach Jon Hadley got his team rejuvenated during the break and the Whippets went back to work. Daison Hadley scored 10 points and Madkins scored 5 to help Varnum go 18-9 in the quarter.
The Whippets had regained the lead. Instead of letting off the gas, the Whippets stepped on the gas on offense and defense and dominated the final quarter with Evans Wise scoring 8 points and Hadley scoring 7 to help Varnum go on a 21-6 run to win with a final score of 62-40.
Leading for Varnum was Daison Hadley with 19 points, one trey and was 4 of 9 from the free throw line.
Jon Madkins had 19 points also and was one of six from the line.
Evans Wise had 13 points and was one for four from the line.
Next up for Varnum is a home game against New Lima Friday the 14th. This game will be Varnum’s Homecoming game.
The homecoming ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the Lady Whippets will start at 6;30 p.m. with the Whippets following directly after.
