Varnum Whippets Come Out on Top of LRC Basketball Tournament

This past week has been a busy week for 10 Oklahoma County high schools as they competed in the Annual Little River Conference Basketball Tournament. Five of those county schools represent Seminole County.

On the first day of the tournament (Monday), the tournament was played at two different locations, Earlsboro and Varnum. Tuesday through Saturday were at the Seminole High School gym. Seminole County schools, Bowlegs, New Lima, Sasakwa, Strother and Varnum were ready to play.

The New Lima Falcons and Falconettes started their tournament off at Earlsboro Monday night. The Falconettes faced the Paden Lady Pirates. New Lima was outmatched and fell 35-59. The Falconettes moved on to face the Mason Lady Eagles Wednesday night and dominated the game with a 44-27 win. The Lady Falcons moved on to the consolation quarter finals to face the Macomb Lady Hornets Friday afternoon but fell short of the win. Macomb won 62-37.

The New Lima Falcon boys took on the Mason Eagles to start their tournament on Monday. The Falcons fought hard but fell just short of the victory with a final score of 40-47. Next, the Falcons faced the Earlsboro Wildcats Thursday evening and didn’t have enough to win. Earlsboro won 79-27.

The Bowlegs Lady Bison started their tournament at Varnum Monday night facing the Macomb Lady Hornets. Bowlegs fell to Macomb 27-51. The Lady Bison faced the Sasakwa Lady Vikings next on Wednesday. It was a tough battle, but the Lady Bison fell again 48-55.

The Bowlegs Bison boys started at Varnum facing the Moss Pirates on Monday late afternoon. Bowlegs came from behind to tie the game up at the end of regulation. The game went into overtime and both teams battled again and went into another overtime. This time the Pirates barely pulled out the win 67-64. Bowlegs now faced the Macomb Hornets Thursday and came away with a huge win 66-46. Bowlegs now moved on to the consolation quarter finals to face the Mason Eagles Friday. The Bison proved to be too much for the Eagles as Bowlegs won 50-42. Bowlegs made it to Championship Saturday to face the Earlsboro Wildcats for the Consolation Championship. The Bison fell behind but closed the gap in the second half but could not pull out the win. Earlsboro won 57-43.

The Strother Yellowjackets and Lady Yellowjackets almost faced the same team in the tournament. The Strother Lady Yellowjackets took on the Sasakwa Lady Vikings Monday night at Varnum. The game went back and forth on the score board, but the Lady Yellowjackets pulled out the win 49-36. Strother now faced the #2 Varnum Lady Whippets Wednesday night. It was another close game for the Lady Yellowjackets, but Strother fell 40-49. The Lady Yellowjackets moved on to face the Paden Lady Pirates for third place on Saturday. The game went back and forth in a close game, but the Lady Yellowjackets fell 36-46.

The Strother Yellowjackets took on the Earlsboro Wildcats Monday to start their tournament at Varnum. Strother took care of business and won 75-67. Next up was the #5 Varnum Whippets on Thursday evening at Seminole. The Yellowjackets battled throughout the game and kept it close but fell just short of the win. Strother lost 49-59. Now, the Yellowjackets moved on to face the Paden Pirates for the boys third place on Saturday. The Yellowjackets kept the game close but could not pull out the win. Strother fell 66-72.

The Sasakwa Lady Vikings started their tournament at Varnum taking on the Strother Lady Yellowjackets Monday. Sasakwa put up a good fight but fell short of the win. Sasakwa fell 36-49. The Lady Vikings now moved onto face the Bowlegs Lady Bison on Wednesday afternoon. It was another tough battle for the Lady Vikings, but Sasakwa took care of business and won 55-48. Now, the Lady Vikings faced the Moss Lady Pirates in the consolation quarter finals on Friday. The Lady Vikings gave it their all and kept it close but fell 50-57.

The Sasakwa Vikings didn’t start their tournament until Tuesday at Seminole and took on the Mason Eagles. The Vikings dominated Mason with a final score of 77-28. The Vikings moved on to take on the Paden Pirates on Thursday. It was a close game as the Pirates fought hard but could not over come the Vikings as Sasakwa won 88-78. Next up was the championship matchup with Varnum on Saturday.

The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets didn’t start their tournaments until Tuesday also. The Lady Whippets took on the Moss Lady Pirates completely dominated the game with a final score of 59-10. Varnum then took on the Strother Lady Yellowjackets on Wednesday night in the quarter final matchup. The Lady Yellowjackets gave Varnum a fight, but the Lady Whippets prevailed and won 49-40. The Lady Whippets now moved on to the championship game against the Earlsboro Lady Wildcats on Saturday. Again, the Lady Whippets had a tough game and a hard-fought battle but fell short of the win but won the Runner-Up Championship with a final score of 48-56.

The Varnum Whippets started their tournament off facing the Moss Pirates. The Whippets overpowered the Pirates and won 57-28. Varnum then faced the Strother Yellowjackets on Thursday night in their quarter final matchup. It was a close game, but the Whippets prevailed with a final score of 59-49. The Varnum Whippets moved on to the championship game to face the Sasakwa Vikings on Saturday.

The Seminole high school gym was packed for the Championship game. The Whippets took an early lead but the game was a battle from the jump. Sasakwa came right back from their deficit and would tie the game up in the fourth quarter with a little over seven minutes left to play at 49 all. Varnum went back to work on offense and pulled away again, but the Vikings never gave up and kept closing the gap. It was 69-56 with one minute left in favor of the Whippets. Time ran out for the Vikings as the Varnum Whippets won the LRC Championship and the Sasakwa Vikings winning Runner-Up with a final score of 71-60.

“Wasn’t meant for us tonight,” stated Sasakwa Head Coach Chris Jones. “Kids played hard. We’ll get better straight out of football. Went 2-1 after only a few practices and into the Conference Championship game. Anytime you can go the distance with a top 5 team, you take it. I love our guys.”

Next up for Bowlegs is a home game tonight against Graham. First game starts at 6:30 p.m.

New Lima’s next game is an away game at Paden today. The next home game is on the 16th against Konawa.

Sasakwa’s next game is a home game against Strother tonight. First game starts at 6 p.m.

Varnum’s next game is an away game at Bowlegs on the 11th. The next home game for Varnum is against Latta on the 16th. The games will start at 6:30 p.m.
