Varnum Whippets Are Class C District Champions

The Varnum Whippets took on the Lookeba-Sickle Panthers for the Class C District Championship at home Friday afternoon. The Whippets did not disappoint and almost came away with a shutout victory.

The Panthers went to bat first to start the game but went three and out. The Whippets were hungry and took control with Payton Romines scoring on a walk, Aiden Cooper who scored on a walk, Ben Suarez and Jon Madkins both scored on a ground ball.

The Panthers had a hard time on offense and went scoreless the next two innings due to the defense of the Whippets.

Varnum kept their momentum rolling at the bottom of the second with Madkins scoring on a wild pitch, Suarez scored on a ground ball, and Chance Winsett scored on an error.

In the bottom of the third, Brayden Goodwin scored on a ground ball, Romines scored on a sacrifice by Suarez and Cooper scored on a ground ball.

The Panthers lit up the scoreboard at the top of the fourth by K. Taylor and J. Arellano.

The Whippets went to bat in the bottom of the inning and sealed the win when Devan Jones and Romines scored on a ground ball.

The game was called after four innings with the Varnum Whippets winning the District Championship with a final score of 12-2.

Pitching for Varnum was Aiden Cooper who pitched four innings allowing two runs, striking out 10 and walking two.

The Varnum Whippets will play this Thursday at Ft. Cobb-Broxton at 4 p.m. against Mill Creek to start their Regional Tournament.
