Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets Host Districts Thursday
The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets hosted their District Playoffs Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Whippets won their district, and the Whippets play for the Championship Friday afternoon.
Starting with the Varnum Lady Whippets, the girls took on the Bowlegs Lady Bison in a double-header on Thursday.
The game was a battle in the first two innings as neither team could take the lead.
The Lady Whippets got on board in the third with Annakaren Prieto, Kenzlee Houck, Cori Vigil, Ashlyn (courtesy runner), Jenna Lofton and Riley Batchelor all scored.
The Lady Bison struggled on offense and could not get on the scoreboard.
The Lady Whippets took control of the game in the fourth and fifth innings with Houck, Kalea Miller and Prieto scoring the winning runs for Varnum. The Lady Whippets posted a shutout victory with a final score of 10-0.
Pitching for Varnum was Kapri Rodriguez who pitched five innings allowing zero runs, striking out 10 and walking 2.
In the second game with the Lady Bison, Varnum jumped on board first in the first inning with a single run by Kapri Rodriguez.
The frustrations on offense continued to plague Bowlegs in the first few innings.
The Lady Whippets dominated the second inning with Kenzlee Houck, Timilyn Morgan, Karsyn Lowery, Annakaren Prieto, Kapri Rodriguez, Kalea Miller, Riley Miller and Liv Lena scored 10 runs to take a commanding lead.
The Lady Whippets added five more runs at the top of the inning by Bailey Lewis, Houck, Morgan, Lowery and Prieto.
Bowlegs went three and out in the bottom of the third.
Lady Whippets, Lena and Ashlyn scored two more runs at the top of the fourth to go up 19-0. The Lady Bison lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning with Jasi Young scoring on a fly ball.
The Lady Bison’s defense had slowed down the Lady Whippets offense some, but Varnum continued to roll on with Rodriguez and Miller soring at the top of the fifth.
Bowlegs never gave up and continued to fight and scored three more runs by Mariah Edward, Rasin Kolander on a fly ball and Alexis Southern fly ball error.
It was not enough to catch the Lady Whippets as Varnum won the District Championship 21-4.
Pitching for Bowlegs was Jasi Young who pitched five innings allowing 21 runs, striking out four and walking 18.
Pitching for the Lady Whippets was Jenna Lofton who pitched five innings allowing four runs, striking out three and walking four.
The Varnum Whippet boys also started their districts at home and faced the Lookeba-Sickles Panthers to start the playoffs.
The game had a slow start to the day as neither team scored in the first two innings.
The Panthers got on board first with a single run at the top of the third inning.
The Whippets fired right back with Chance Winsett scoring on a ground ball, Brayden Goodwin scored on a fly ball, Payton Romines scored on a ground ball and Devyn Fullbright and Aiden Cooper scored on a ground ball.
The defense of the Whippets held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the innings.
Varnum went back on offense in the fifth inning and put the game away with Fullbright scoring on a fly ball, Cooper Smith and Jon Madkins scored on a line drive.
Varnum Whippets won the game with a final score of 8-1.
Pitching for Varnum was Payton Romines who pitched seven innings allowing one run, striking out five and walking zero.
Next, the Whippets faced the Macomb Hornets in their next round.
The Hornets went to bat first and jumped on board with a single run.
The Whippets were still riding their momentum and dominated the inning with 12 runs by Goodwin, Cooper (inside park homerun), Romines, Fullbright, Smith, Ben Suarez, D Jones, and Winsett
The Hornets went three and out at the top of the second.
Varnum added three more runs by Romines, Madkins and Cooper. The Hornets lit up the scoreboard again with another single run to stay in the game.
Varnum kept their foot on the gas and add to their lead with three more run by Winsett, Goodwin and Cooper.
The Hornets tried one more inning to close the gap but went three and out.
The game was over. Varnum Whippets won 18-2.

The Varnum Whippets take on the Lookeba-Sickle Panthers again for the District Championship Friday afternoon.
