Varnum Stays Undefeated with Shutout Win Over Sasakwa
The undefeated Varnum Whippet hosted the (5-5) Sasakwa Vikings Monday afternoon in a lopsided matchup that ended in a shutout.
The visiting Vikings went to bat first but came up empty with zero runs at the top of the first.
The Whippets jumped out on top with Devyn Fullbright and Ryan Poull scoring on a walk, Brenden Poull scored on a line drive, Jayce Sheffield scored on a walk and Payton Romines scored on a walk, The Vikings managed to get runners on the bases but could not get across home plate during the game. Sasakawa went three and out again at the top of the second.
The Whippets went back to work on offense and stepped on the gas in the second.
Aiden Cooper scored on a ground ball, Romines and Brenden Poull scored on a line drive, Weston Lusk scored on a ground ball, Chance Winsett scored on a walk, Fullbright and Brayden Goodwin scored on a ground ball, Ryan Poull scored on a sacrifice by Sheffield, Cooper scored on a fly ball, B. Poull scored on a walk and Jon Madkins scored on a walk.
Sasakwa needed to score at the top of the third inning but could not light up the scoreboard.
The Varnum Whippets posted a shutout and stay undefeated with a final score of 17-0.
Pitching for Sasakwa was Braydon Lamb pitched 0.1 of an inning, allowing five runs, six walks and zero strikeouts.
Nathaniel Gentry pitched 0.2 of an inning, allowing six runs, four walks and one strikeout.
Pitching for the Whippets was Aiden Cooper who pitched two innings, allowing zero runs, one walk and five strikeouts.
Ben Suarez pitched one inning, allowing zero runs, two walks and two strikeouts.
Next up for both teams will be the LRC Baseball Tournament April 2nd – 4th.
Varnum High School will host Bowlegs, New Lima, Mason, Strother and Varnum.
Moss High School will host Earlsboro, Macomb, Moss, Paden and Sasakwa.
The Sasakwa Vikings start the tournament out on Thursday facing Paden on Thursday the 2nd at 2 p.m. at Moss.
The Varnum Whippets start their tournament facing the winner of the Bowlegs and Mason game on Thursday the 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at Varnum.
