Varnum Has Rubber Band Games Tuesday Night

The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets both hosted ball games Tuesday night.

The Whippets hosted the Latta Panthers in some baseball action but fell. The Lady Whippets hosted the in-county Bowlegs Lady Bison on their Senior Night and dominated the game.

The Varnum boys started their evening off facing the Latta Panthers and the Panthers jumped out to an early lead with a grand slam in the first inning. The Whippets lit up the scoreboard with a homerun of their own by Devyn Fullbright.

The Panthers added to their lead in the second with two more runs to go up 6-1 at the top of the inning. The Whippets fought back and scored when Ben Suarez scored on a ground ball and Chance Winsett scored on a ground ball.

The Whippets closed the gap by 3, heading into the third inning. The defenses showed in the remaining innings, but the Panthers managed another run in the top of the fourth to seal their victory.

The Latta Panthers won the game 7-3.

Pitching for Varnum was Payton Romines who pitched seven innings allowing seven runs, striking out two and walking none.

The Lady Whippets honored their two seniors, AK Prieto and Jenna Lofton before the game Tuesday evening.

The Lady Bison went to bat first to start the game but went three and out. Varnum got their home crowd going when Karsyn Lowery scored on a ground, Cori Vigil scored on a fly ball, Jenna Lofton and Riley Batchelor scored on a fly ball and Faith Madkins scored on a ground.

Bowlegs struggled on offense in the first few innings of the game and went scoreless. The Lady Whippets took advantage and added to their lead with Batchelor scoring on a fly ball and Kalea Miller scoring on an error.

Varnum had a 7-0 lead heading into the third inning. Bowlegs’ frustrations continued in the inning and went scoreless. The defense of the Lady Bison held the Lady Whippets scoreless in the inning.

Varnum lit up the scoreboard again in the bottom of the fourth when Lowery scored on a line drive and Miller scored on a ground ball.

The Lady Whippets had a 9-point lead heading into the fifth inning. Bowlegs fired back in the top of the inning with Jaycee Allison and Elizabeth Kelly scoring on a line drive, Kendall Perkins scoring on a ground ball, Kasin Kolander scoring on a ground ball and Mariah Edwards and Alexis Southern scoring on a line drive to close the gap within 3.

The Lady Whippets answered right back with AK Prieto and Bailey Vigil scoring on a wild pitch and Kenzlee Houck scoring on a ground and to seal the win, Batchelor and Ashlyn (a courtesy runner for Miller) scored on a ground ball.

The Varnum Lady Whippets won the game 14-6.

Pitching for Varnum was Cori Vigil who pitched five innings allowing six runs, striking out nine and walking one.

Pitching for Bowlegs was Alexis Southern who pitched 4.2 innings allowing 14 runs, striking out 5 and walking 5.
