Varnum Ends Regular Basketball Season as Conference Champions
The Varnum Whippets and Lady Whippets rounded out their regular basketball season with two home games against Oklahoma Christian Academy (OCA) on Friday and the Sasakwa Vikings on Monday.
The Lady Whippets took on the OCA Lady Eagles Friday night and controlled the game from the jump. Varnum dominated the quarter by going on a 20-7 run to take a huge lead.
The defense of Varnum suffocated the Lady Eagles’ offense in the second and only allowed two points scored in the frame. The offense continued to roll and extended their lead by fifteen points.
The Lady Eagles were down by 28 points heading into the third quarter. OCA continued to fight the uphill battle but could not make a dent in the score. Varnum scored 14 points to put the game out of reach for the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles were facing a 37-point deficit in the final frame. The Lady Whippets let off the gas in the fourth and cruised in for the win with a final score of 58-21.
Leading the way for the Lady Whippets was Makiyah Coker, Kalea Miller and Faith Madkins who each scored 10 points each in the game.
Coker had 12 rebounds, Miller had 6 rebounds, and Madkins had 12 rebounds and two steals.
The Varnum Whippet boys were next to take to the court. Varnum is ranked #5 in Class B1, and the OCA Eagles are ranked #2 in Class 2A.
Varnum had a tough time finding their rhythm in the first and fell behind 12-22 at the end of the first quarter.
The Whippets struggled on offense in the second as the Eagle defense held the Whippets to 8 points scored in the frame.
Varnum was down by 24 points, heading into the third quarter. The Whippets found a spark and used that momentum to close the gap by 16 points.
The defense stepped up their game in the final quarter and held the Eagles to 9 points scored. The offense continued to close the gap, but time ran out for the Whippets.
The OCA Eagles won 70-63.
Leading the way for the Whippets was Jon Madkins with 24 points, 17 rebounds, four blocks, one steal and was two of nine from the free throw line.
Devyn Fullbright scored 13 points, two treys, four assists, three rebounds, three steals and was one of two from the line.
Evans Wise scored 12 points, two assists, seven rebounds, two steals and was two of two from the line.
The Sasakwa game was a make-up game that was postponed due to weather. The game was originally scheduled for the 27th of January, but snow postponed the game until Monday the 9th of February.
The Lady Whippets and Vikings started the evening off. The Lady Whippets jumped out to take the early lead with a 10-point advantage in the first.
The Lady Vikings found their momentum in the second quarter and closed the gap, but the Varnum Lady Whippets kept their foot on the gas and ended the quarter with a huge lead.
The Lady Vikings were down by 20, heading into the third quarter. The game was a tug of war with the scoreboard as both teams scored 15 points in the frame.
Sasakwa stepped up their offensive game plan and controlled the fourth quarter, but the Lady Vikings were fighting an uphill battle. The Lady Vikings scored 22 points, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Lady Whippets.
Varnum won the battle 77-60. The Lady Whippets end their regular season 20-4, 9-0 in Conference regular season play and are the Conference Champions.
The Lady Vikings as a team shot 58% from the free throw line, 22 rebounds, 3 blocks and 16 turnovers.
Leading the way for the Lady Whippets was Faith Madkins with 25 points,17 rebounds, one block, two steal and was three of five from the line.
Alyviah Lena scored 14 points, two treys, three assists, one rebound, one steal and was two for two from the line.
Ashlyn White-Richards scored 12 points, two treys and two rebounds.
Next was the showdown between the Sasakwa Vikings boys and the Varnum Whippets.
Varnum had won the LRC Championship that was played between the Vikings and the Whippets and Sasakwa was looking for redemption.
The first quarter was a heated battle as both teams lit up the scoreboard. The Whippets edged out the Vikings by one point at the end of the period.
Defense played a bigger role in the second but both teams continued to fight until the buzzer.
The Varnum Whippets had a two-point advantage heading into the third quarter.
Sasakwa kept their fire burning through the break and their defense held the Whippets to 9 points scored in the quarter. The offense went back to work, and the Vikings took the lead by the end of the third quarter.
The Whippets were looking at a four-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter. The Whippets went back on offensive attack and outshot the Vikings on a 22-12 run in the final frame.
The Varnum Whippets protected their home court and ended their regular season 20-4 and 9-0 in Conference play and are back-to-back Conference Champions.
The Sasakwa Vikings as a team shot 71% from the free throw line, 31 rebounds, 2 blocks and 11 turnovers.
“Proud of my guys,” stated Sasakwa Head Coach Chris Jones. “We been called all kinds of things like Thugs and Punks, but they fought like crazy tonight and never complained, never cried around, never got in other peoples faces, just played the game and accepted everything that happened out there tonight. We lost but this doesn’t change our goals. Proud of our efforts, proud of how we carried ourselves, proud of our fight.” – Coach Jones.
Leading the way for the Whippets was Daison Hadley with 26 points, two treys, four assists, one rebound, one block, two steals and was ten of sixteen from the free throw line.
Devyn Fullbright scored 18 points, three treys, one assist, eleven rebounds, two steals and was three of three from the line.
Evans Wise scored 12 points, two treys, two rebounds and was four of seven from the line.
The Sasakwa Vikings head to District at Thackerville. The Lady Vikings play Thursday at 6 p.m. against Thackerville and the Vikings play Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Thackerville.
The Varnum Whippets head to Wetumka for Districts. The Lady Whippets play Friday at 6 p.m. against Wetumka and the Whippets play at 7:30 p.m. against Wetumka.
