Strother Yellowjackets Win Basketball Season Opener Thursday

The Strother Yellowjackets hosted the Moss Pirates Thursday night for their basketball season opener.

The Lady Yellowjackets took to the court first to start the evening off.

Strother took the lead with Brooklyn Turner knocking down a threepoint shot to fire up the home crowd.

The Lady Pirates fired back in the second quarter with 14 points scored. Lady Pirate Tara Keese found her spot and drained 3 three-point shots to help the Lady Pirates take the lead before the half.

The Lady Yellowjackets were down by two, heading into the third quarter.

Strother regrouped at the break and swarmed back with Olivia Spears scoring six points in the frame and Turner and KK Murray each knocked down a trey.

Strother went back on top by 10 points. The final quarter was a low scoring affair but the Lady Yellowjackets pulled out the win and defended their home court with a final score of 35-23 over Moss.

Leading for Strother was Brooklyn Turner with 17 points, four treys and was one of four from the line.

Olivia Spears, Ludie Barrett-Higgins and KK Murray each scored 6 points on the evening.

The Strother boys took to the court next and battled the Moss Pirates boys. Strother went on a 14-10 run in the first frame. Peyton Moody, Darion Morales and Michael Kanard each drained a trey to excite the crowd.

The Yellowjackets stuck to their game plan in the second quarter and added to their lead with a 12-9 run to go up 26-19 at the break.

The defensive pressure from both sides was apparent in the third. The Yellowjackets edged out the Pirates by 2-points to keep their lead.

In the final frame, both teams stepped on the gas made their shots count.

The Pirates were pressuring on offense and closed the gap with Kelly Jackson scoring 10 points in the frame.

Strother didn’t panic and stepped up on offense. Kanard scored 7 points in the quarter and Moody knock down another trey to help the Yellowjacket cruise in for the win with a final score of 54-41.

Leading for the Yellowjackets was Peyton Moody with 17 points, 4 treys and was one of two from the free throw line.

Michael Kanard had 16 points, one three-point shot and was one of six from the line.

Braiden Teague scored 6 points on the evening.

Next up for Strother is the LRC Basketball Tournament December 1-6 at the Seminole High School gym.

The next home game for the Yellowjackets will be on the 11th against Crowder.

First game is set to start at 6 p.m.
