Seminole State Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Belles Monday

Seminole State had a historic evening Monday night as the SSC Belles celebrated their 50th anniversary of the 1976 National Championship.

Seminole State hosted the Northern Oklahoma College- Tonkawa and protected their home court in both games. Before the evening kicked off, the college honored Head Coach Rita Story Schell for her 450th win in her coaching career.

The Lady Belles took the early lead with Anjewl Murillo scoring 10 points and Aija Carter scoring 8 points in the frame to help the Belles go on a 25-15 run in the first.

The pace slowed down just a bit in the second, but Seminole State continued to extend their lead before the half.

During the break, Seminole State College honored the 1976 team as alumni from that team were present, along with head coach Dixie Woodall.

The defense of the Lady Mavs stepped up in the second and held the Belles to 12 points scored but didn’t capitalize on the opportunity.

The Lady Mavs were down by 12 points heading into the final quarter. NOC found some momentum in the quarter and scored 22 points and tried to catch the Lady Belles but the lead was too much for NOC.

The SSC Belles won the match 71-62 at home on their anniversary night. Leading the way for Seminole State was Alona Cooper-Rochovitz with 19 points, one threepoint, one rebound, six assists, two steals and was four of four from the free throw line.

Anjewl Murillo and Aija Carter scored 14 points each on the evening.

The Seminole State boys were next to take the court and defend their home.

The Mavericks took the lead early and were ahead by 6 points early in the first half but the SSC Trojans settled down and found their rhythm and tied the game around the 14-minute mark.

SSC’s Ejay Greer found his three-point range in the first half and knocked down two treys and Joseph Hunter scored 16 points from the field to help the Trojans go on a 51-35 run in the first half of the game.

The second half was a battle as both teams traded blows in a close half. Hunter continued to put points on the board and Greer and Christian Cummings helped the Trojans with their threepoint shooting.

The Mavericks had some three-point shooting of their own in the second half with four made to try and close the gap, but the Trojans kept the pressure on cruised in for the win.

Seminole State won the match 89-73.

Leading for the Trojans was Joseph Hunter with 28 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, three steals, one block and was six of ten from the free throw line.

Ejay Greer scored 19 points, four treys, two rebounds, one assist, one steal and was five of five from the line.

Dylan Golightly scored 13 points, one trey, two rebounds, two steals and was two of three from the line.

Next up for Seminole State is an away game on the 23rd at NOCEnid.

The next home game is on the 26th against Redlands. The game is set to start at 5:30 with the Belles and the Trojans following after.
