Seminole Hosts Wewoka Tigers in an Exciting Homecoming Match
The Ole’ Seminole County rivalry was back Friday night as the Chieftains hosted the Wewoka Tigers for their basketball homecoming.
Seminole elected Ryeley Stanfill as their Queen and Christian Brager for their King.
The last time the two county teams shared the same court was on December 20, 2019, where Wewoka had the home field. The Seminole Lady Chieftains won their match 59-44 and the Wewoka Tigers won their battle 50-45.
The Chieftains and Tiger boys started the evening off in front of a packed gymnasium on Friday.
The Chieftains lit up the score board first, but the Tigers rallied back to tie it up, but Seminole went on a three-point shooting frenzy by Ben Schatzel and Chris Brager, each knocking down two treys apiece to help the Chieftains go on a 19-11 run in the first.
The Wewoka Tigers regrouped themselves in the second and fired back with some threepoint shooting of their own by Mike Piza and Bill Stephens while the defense held the Chieftains to six points scored in the frame. Wewoka had a 27-25 lead heading into the half.
The Chieftains went back to work on their aerial display again in the third with three treys scored by Schatzel, Brager and Jay Ladd. Wewoka kept things close by scoring 18 points from the field. Seminole just edged out the Tigers at the end of the third by one.
The fourth quarter was a tug of war battle as the lead had several changes.
Wewoka’s Stephens scored 12 points from the field and Seminole continued with their three-points shooting as both teams left everything on the court. Wewoka had a seven-point lead with a little under 3 minutes left to play in the quarter.
The Chieftains fought their way back and closed the gap. The game was tied up 60-60 with less than a minute in regulation. Seminole had the ball and drove it down court and Jay Lad made a tough shot that went in with six seconds left. Wewoka tried to set up a tying shot, but lost control and time ran out for the Tigers.
Fans from both sides were on their feet as the rival teams put a hundred and twenty- two points combined on the board in a classic showdown.
The Seminole Chieftains protected their home court with a final score of 62-60.
Fans were heard saying that it was one of the best games they had seen this season.
Leading the way for the Wewoka Tigers was Bill Stephens with 24 points, one trey, and was one of three from the free throw line.
Ladarious Woods scored 13 points and was one of four from the line.
Mike Piza scored 10 points, two treys, and was two of two from the line.
Lead the way for the Seminole Chieftains was Jay Lad with 25 points, one trey and was three of three from the line.
Chris Brager scored 24 points, five treys and was one of two from the line.
Ben Schatzel scored 12 points, which all came from four threepoint shots. The Lady Chieftains and the Lady Tigers hit the court next.
Wewoka took control of the game from the start. Emma Slovacek and Aubrey Alexandra found their three-point range in the first and Heisel Sanchez scored six from the field as the Lady Tigers went on a 16-6 run in the quarter.
The Lady Chieftains rallied back in the second with Jaxie Satawake scoring eight points in the frame to help close the gap, but the offense of the Lady Tigers kept rolling with Sanchez scoring ten points of her own to help keep Wewoka ahead at the half.
The Lady Chieftains were down by 17 points at the break and struggled to find some momentum on offense in the second half. The defense of Seminole held the Lady Tigers to 12 points in the third but could not capitalize on it.
The Lady Tigers went back to work on offense in the final frame with Leilani Scott scoring 11 points and Sanchez knocking down two treys to help the Tigers stroll in for the victory with a final score of 68-38.
Leading for the Lady Chieftains was Jaxie Satawake with 16 points, one trey and was seven of eight from the free throw line.
Ryeley Stanfill scored 13 points, one trey and was four of six from the line.
