Seminole Chieftains Struggle with Snyder Sidelined Friday Night
On Friday, October 10th, the Seminole Chieftains hosted the Perkins- Tryon Demons without Head Coach Mike Snyder roaming the sidelines due to a one-game suspension handed out by the OSSAA. Without their main man, Seminole fell behind early and ended up losing by a score of 63-26 to the De-mons. The loss drops the Chieftains to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in district play.
The ballgame started about as poorly as possible for the home team. Three straight turnovers, 2 interceptions, and a fumble by the offense allowed Perkins to jump on the Chieftains quickly. Taking a 22-0 lead just seven minutes into the game. SHS QB Donavin Garfield would respond to the adversity and score on an 18-yard run to cut the lead to 22-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The beginning of the second period was much of the same for the Demons, scoring on their first three drives to take a 42-8 lead at the 7:15 mark of the quarter. The Chieftains would strike next with a 23-yard catch and run by WR Tre Johnson to cut the deficit to 42-14, which is where it would remain until the intermission.
Seminole would receive the second-half kick and build on the momentum from the end of the first. WR Jay Ladd took a jet sweep and wove his way 53 yards to the house, bringing life to the home crowd, and bringing the score to 42-20 at the 10:45 mark. The Chieftains then forced a Demon threeand- out thanks to a DE Christian Bragher sack on 3rd down. However, the Mean Green offense sputtered and went three and out themselves. Perkins would capitalize, scoring their first touch-down of the second half, extending their lead.
After another Chieftain three-and-out, the Demons would strike again on the first play of the final quarter, igniting a running clock for the rest of the game.
Seminole would put one more score on the board, courtesy of a 68-yard touchdown pass from QB Donavin Garfield to WR Jay Ladd with 6:15 to go. The Demons responded with one final touchdown to cap off the visitors’ win and hand the Chieftains the 63-26 loss.
Statistically, the Seminole offense had 294 total yards with QB Donavin Garfield throwing for 144 of them on 3-10 passing and the run game providing the other 150 on 29 carries. The three turnovers the Chieftains had were their most in a game this season.
Although the defense gave up 63 points and 237 rushing yards, the unit did hold the Perkins passing attack to 6-12 for 92 yards and forced two Demon fumbles.
Up next is a short week for the Mean Green, with the team’s next contest scheduled for Thursday, October 16th, at McLoud. The Chieftains have won the last seven matchups against the Redskins by an average score of 43.6 to 10.6.
Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
