OU’s Quarterback John Mateer Announces That His Hand Surgery was a Success

Posted in:

SOONER WIRE - Oklahoma Sooners starting quarterback John Mateer underwent surgery on Wednesday to fix a broken bone in his hand. With OU fans collectively hoping for the best, they didn’t have to wait too long to find out how the procedure went.

Mateer posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the surgery was a success and thanked God and Dr. Steven Shin, who performed the surgery. Shin has gained a bit of a cult following over the past few days by Sooner Nation, who obviously hoped Mateer’s surgery would go off without a hitch.

“Thank God for a successful procedure,” Mateer wrote. “Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!”

Now, Mateer’s recovery process begins, as he’s expected to miss around three to four weeks. However, he’s out indefinitely and the timetable for his return could be longer than that.

The next five weeks for the Sooners line up as a bye week, a home game against Kent State, the annual matchup in the Cotton Bowl with Texas, a road game against South Carolina and a home game against Ole Miss.

Backup quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. will start until Mateer is healthy enough to return to the lineup. Hawkins started four games for Oklahoma as a true freshman in 2024.

When Oklahoma returns next weekend, the Kent State game has a kickoff time of 3 p.m. and will be televised on the SEC Network.

Kent State is 1-3 on their season thus far.
