STORMIN IN NORMAN - The Oklahoma women’s basketball team is obviously in serious need of some worthy SEC competition.

In their last nonconference game of the season on Monday afternoon, the No. 8 Sooners absolutely obliterated North Carolina Central 126-54 inside Lloyd Noble Center to set a new program record for most points scored in a single game. The previous record was 122, set in a win against Western Carolina just last season.

Of the 10 OU players who played at least five minutes, all but two reached double figures in scoring. Sophomore guard Zya Vann led the Sooners with 21 points and 10 rebounds to notch a double-double as the leading scorer. Center Raegan Beers also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman point guard Aaliyah Chavez added 20 points just behind Vann, and junior forward Sahara Williams put up 16 points with seven rebounds. Senior guard Payton Verhulst, averaging 11.3 points a games, was the only starter without double figures at four points.

Freshman guard Keziah Lofton came off the bench and tallied 15 points. Brooklyn Stewart, Emma Tolan and Caya Smiyh also recorded double figures as reserves.

The onslaught started quickly with a 27-7 lead after the first quarter, but the Sooners really began eyeing a record after a 40-point second quarter. OU then added 21 in the third and 38 in the fourth to make history.

The Sooners shot 30 3-pointers as a team while making 14 of them, resulting in 42 of their points. It wasn’t all quick shots, though, as OU had 33 team assists compared NC Central’s four. OU also blocked a whopping 12 shots, which was the most ever under head coach Jennie Baranczyk.

The win boosted the Sooners to 12-1 through their nonconference slate and completed a perfect December that included five victories. OU will tip off SEC play against Texas A&M on Thursday, Jan.1, at College Station.

OU men’s basketball set historic school record in scoring

Oklahoma shot a school-record 67.8% from the field and got double-digit scoring from six players, including all five starters, in a 107-54 win over Stetson on Monday night at Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners’ 107 points were a season high and tied for their most since the 2017-18 campaign.

OU, which went 12 for 24 from 3-point range, scored 51 points in the first half and 56 in the second, and posted a 54-18 advantage in paint points to improve to 9-3. Stetson, which fell to 4-9, shot 34.5% for the game and 17.9% (5 for 28) from behind the arc.

All nine Sooners who scored made at least half of their field-goal attempts.

Sophomore forward Derrion Reid went 9 for 12 from the field and finished with a career-high 22 points to go along with six re-bounds and two assists. The five highest-scoring games of his career have come over the last seven outings.

Junior guard Xzayvier Brown provided scoring punch for the third straight contest, netting 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting. He had three assists and just one turnover in 35 minutes, and over the last three games has registered 60 points and only three turnovers. Fifth-year center Mohamed Wague recorded 15 points, his most in a month, a game-high nine boards and two assists. He was 6 of 7 from the field.

Forwards Tae Davis (12 points) and Kuol Atak (11) and guard Nijel Pack (11) also scored in double-digits. Atak played a career-high 24 minutes, and Pack went 3 for 5 from behind the arc. It was his ninth outing of at least three treys in the last 10 games.

The Sooners, whose only deficit of the night was 2-1, made nine of their first 12 shots in taking a 26-11 lead, pushed their advantage to 19 points at 41-22 and led 51-30 at half. Behind Reid, who netted 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, they finished the opening 20 minutes 20 of 26 from the field (76.9%) and 6 of 9 from 3-point distance (66.7%). It was just the second time since the 2013-14 season OU shot at least 75% from the field in a half.

OU picked up where it left off to start the second half, making its first five shots and scoring 13 points on its initial five possessions to go up 64-35. Pack keyed the spurt with a pair of 3-pointers.

Porter Moser’s squad committed seven turnovers in the first half but just one in the second, registering its seventh effort of single- digit turnovers in the last 10 games. It’s the only time within a season the Sooners have accomplished the feat in the last 30 years.

OU’s 15-rebound advantage (39-24) marked its second largest of the season.

The Sooners are off until Dec. 29 when they close non-conference play by hosting Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. CT at Lloyd Noble Center.
