John Mateer NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables announced Tuesday that quarterback John Mateer will undergo surgery Wednesday to address a right-hand injury he sustained in Saturday’s win over Auburn.

Venables said the expectation is that Mateer will return to action sometime this season.

“After consulting with medical experts, it became clear that surgery is the best option for John and his short- and long-term future,” said Venables. “He’s extremely disappointed he will miss some game action but is eager to correct the issue and move forward. As he is with everything, we know he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and work to return to the field as quickly as possible.”

Mateer’s injury occurred in the first quarter of OU’s 24-17 victory over the Tigers. He played the entire contest, finishing with 271 passing yards and 29 rushing yards, and engineering the game-winning touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. His nine-yard TD run with 4:54 remaining put the Sooners ahead for good.

Venables said sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start OU’s next game against Kent State on Oct. 4.

“We have all the confidence in the world in Michael and are excited for his opportunity to lead our offense while John recovers,” said Venables. “He had some big moments for us last season as a true freshman and has just gotten better and better. I’m proud of the work Michael’s put in and the progress he’s made, and know he will attack this opportunity to help lead our football team.”

The Sooners (4-0 overall, 1-0 SEC) are ranked No. 7 and No. 10 in this week’s AP and coaches’ polls, respectively.

Mateer, who ranks second nationally this season with his 351.3 yards of total offense per contest, has rushed for at least one touchdown and passed for at least one TD in each of his last 10 games dating back to last year. It is the nation’s longest active streak and tied with former Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson for the third-longest streak since the start of the 2000 season.

Venables said surgery was the best option and Mateer should return “later this season.” There is speculation the recovery time is three to four weeks.

The surgery is considered “straight-forward,” will put Mateer out for about a month and will be handled by Dr. Steven Shin. Shin, according to Schefter, is considered one of the country’s leading hand and wrist surgeons. He has performed previous operations on Drew Brees, Steph Curry and Mike Trout.

Either way, it is very unlikely Mateer will be active for the Texas game. It would be hard to imagine he’d be able to return in 18 days.

Mateer has the consensus second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy behind Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. A Heisman for the Sooners signal caller is now also unlikely.
