Late Fireworks Push OSU Cowgirls Softball Past No. 8 Texas A&M
CLEARWATER, Fla. – A sixth inning that included back-to-back home runs from Karli Godwin and Audrey Schneidmiller, plus a game-saving outfield assist from Tia Warsop propelled the Oklahoma State softball team to a 9-8 win over No. 8/8 Texas A&M at the Clearwater Invitational Friday.
It was the Cowgirls’ second win over a ranked opponent in as many days and was OSU’s first over a team ranked in the top-10 since the Pokes beat No. 5 Texas A&M in Clearwater last season. Friday’s contest was a wild ride, with the Cowgirls jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first on the strength of a bases-loaded double from Rosie Davis and a two-run double from Jayden Jones. OSU extended its lead to 7-1 with additional scores in the second and third innings, respectively. With the game drifting toward run-rule territory, the Aggies lashed back with a five-run third, fueled by a threerun home run from Mya Perez.
With momentum swinging heavily toward Texas A&M, RyLee Crandall was inserted into the game in the top of the fourth and retired the first six batters she faced to stall the Aggie attack.
Godwin and Schneidmiller’s back-to-back solo home runs reignited the Cowgirl offense in the sixth and extended the OSU advantage to 9-6, but Texas A&M’s Maddie Sauni responded with a solo homer of her own in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs in the inning, Perez hit an RBI single to right, but Warsop gunned down Kennedy Powell attempting to go from first to third to stomp out the threat. Had Powell been safe, Texas A&M would have had the potential tying run at third and the potential go-ahead run at second. Crandall retired the side in order in the seventh inning to close out the win, striking out Micaela Wark for the first out and coaxing a ground-out by Tallen Edwards to finalize the victory for OSU. Eight different Cowgirls had at least one hit in the game, with Davis driving in a game-high four runs. Crandall delivered four strong innings in relief to improve to 3-0 on the year. Taylor Pannell suffered the loss for the Aggies to fall to 0-1.
