Konawa Tiger Basketball Invitational Showed Great Competition
The Annual Konawa Invitational Basketball Tournament came and went this past weekend with the Konawa Lady Tigers winning the Consolation Championship and the Wewoka Tigers winning the Runner up Championship.
The 2026 Konawa Invitational had eight high schools participating this year: Byng, Destiny Christian, Konawa, Holdenville, Madill, Seminole, Wewoka and Wilson-Henryetta.
The Seminole Lady Chieftains started their tournament off Thursday evening facing the Madill Lady Wildcats. The Lady Wildcats dominated the game and won the match 68-10. The Lady Chieftains faced the Wilson-Henryetta Lady Tigers on Friday morning. Wilson proved to be too much for the Lady Chieftains and pulled out the win 69-34.
The Seminole Chieftains boys started out facing the Wilson Tigers Thursday night. The game was neck to neck throughout the game, but the Tigers pulled out the win with a final score of 60-52. The Chieftain boys took on the Madill Wildcats next Friday afternoon. Again, the Chieftains put up another close game but fell short of winning. The final score of the match was 69-53 Madill.
For the home team Konawa, the Tiger boys faced the Wewoka Tiger boys Thursday afternoon to start their first day of the tournament. The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle between the teams. Wewoka stepped up their offensive the next three quarters and won the battle 71-26. Konawa faced the Destiny Christian Wildcats next on Friday afternoon. The Tigers kept the game close but fell short of the victory. Final score was 63-55 Destiny Christian.
The Konawa Lady Tigers started the tournament facing the Destiny Christian Lady Wildcats on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Tigers had tough time getting the offense rolling in the game. Konawa fell 23-69. The Lady Tigers faced the Holdenville Lady Wolverines next Friday afternoon. The game had a very slow start in the first quarter, but the Lady Tiger prevailed and won the match 38-28. The Lady Tigers now faced the Wilson Lady Tigers for the Consolation Championship on Saturday afternoon. The game was a nail-biter as the teams were evenly matched. The game came down to the wire with the home team Konawa Lady Tigers pulling out the win 47-46 to win the Consolation Championship.
The Wewoka Lady Tigers started their tournament off facing the Wilson-Henryetta Lady Tigers Thursday afternoon. Everything went Wewoka’s way as they dominated the game from the start. Wewoka won the game 61-22. The Lady Tigers moved on to face the Madill Lady Wildcats Friday night. The Lady Tigers kept it close but fell behind and could not recover. Madill won 52-31. The Lady Tigers played for Third Place by facing the Byng Lady Pirates Saturday afternoon. The Lady Pirates took the early lead, but the Lady Tigers closed the gap in the third quarter to make it a game. The Lady Pirates stepped up their offense in the final frame and pulled out the win with a final score of 52-31.
The Wewoka Tigers faced the Konawa Tigers for their first game of the tournament Thursday. Wewoka took control of the game from the second quarter on and won the game 71-26. The Tigers moved on to face the Holdenville Wolverines Friday evening in a very tough battle. The game was close from the jump and came down to the wire. The game ended up going into overtime and the Wewoka Tigers pulled out the win 77-75. Wewoka now moved on to face the Byng Pirates for the Championship.
Wewoka’s Ladarius Woods scored six points in the first quarter as Mike Piza knocked down a trey to keep the game close, but the Pirates went on a 17-11 run in the frame.
The Piates extended their lead in the second by 9 points before the half.
Wewoka’s defense held the Pirates to 12 points scored in the third as the offense slowly closed the gap with Bill Stephens scoring eight points in the quarter.
Wewoka was still behind in the final frame but rallied back within 2 points with less than a minute left to play. The game went back and forth, and the Tigers were down by 3 with 15 seconds left to play. The Pirates managed to pull away in the fading seconds to win the game 62-56.
The Wewoka Tigers won the Runner Up Championship of the Konawa Invitational.
Leading for Wewoka was Bill Stephens with 19 points and was five of eight from the free throw line.
Mike Piza had 16 points, three treys and was one of one from the line.
Ladarius Woods had 16 points on the evening.
