Survey Shows ‘The Shining’ Tops The List as Oklahomans’ Favorite Anti-Christmas Movie
‘Tis the season to be jolly! Or is it? Traditionally, this is when many of us settle down in front of the television with a good, old-fashioned Christmas movie, and goodness knows there are enough of them! From Elf to It’s a Wonderful Life, The Santa Clause to Home Alone, they are all designed to bring us some holiday cheer.
But while many polls around this time of year focus on ranking the most popular Christmas movies in each state, one company realized that sometimes all that syrupy sentiment can be a bit too much. Many people find themselves longing for something completely different to stream during the holiday season. HostingAdvice decided to carry out a survey (3,000) to find out which ‘anti-Christmas’ movies Oklahomans plan on streaming instead. The top 3 were as follows: #1. The Shining (1980) Firstly, the top anti-Christmas movie across the state of Oklahoma is The Shining (1980). This psychological horror masterpiece, directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Stephen King’s novel, follows Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) as he becomes the caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel for the winter. While Jack initially hopes the time away will help him focus on his writing, the eerie hotel and its supernatural influences quickly drive him into madness. With its iconic scenes and unsettling atmosphere, The Shining makes for an anti-Christmas classic that replaces holiday joy with pure, bone-chilling terror.
#2. Gremlins (1984) Gremlins(1984)emerged as the state’s second favorite movie. It still has several festive elements, including the fact that the action is set over the holiday season. The main character, Billy, receives the Mogwai which absolutely must NOT be fed after midnight or get wet — as an early Christmas gift from his dad. Of course, both of these things happen to poor, cute little Mogwai, and festive chaos ensues...
#3. Krampus (2015) Coming third on the list is Krampus (2015). The Krampus is actually a demonic, horned folklore figure from Austria and Bavaria who is said to accompany Saint Nicholas on his visits to children during the night of December 5th; while Saint Nick rewards good children with presents, mean old Krampus punishes naughty ones by beating them with a stick. In the movie, a family fight around Christmastime causes the youngest son to lose his Christmas spirit. This unleashes Krampus’s wrath, and only by coming together again can the family save everyone from their fate (so yes, it definitely has a syrupy ending!).
Below are the remaining seven anti-Christmas movies Oklahomans plan on watching over the festive season - all guaranteed to kill any Christmas vibes!
#4 Silence of the Lambs (1991) #5 A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) #6 Black Christmas (1974) #7 Friday the 13th (1980) #8 Psycho (1960) #9 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) #10 The Exorcist (1973) Infographic showing survey results HostingAdvice’s survey also found that the most overplayed Christmas movie is Home Alone, with over a quarter of Oklahomans (26%) sick of the sight of it; this was followed by A Christmas Story (24%) — (which the average person has watched this 4 times in their lifetime); Elf (19%); It’s a Wonderful Life (19%) and The Polar Express (11%).
The most tiresome or repetitive element of classic Christmas movies was found by just over a third (34%) to be that the same old movies play every single year. 28% felt they had predictable storylines, 23% resented their over-thetop cheeriness, and 15% bemoaned the lack of variety in their themes. Over half (52%) feel there are not enough fresh and modern Christmas movies being released.
But despite all that, the longest average uninterrupted stretch of movie- watching over the festive period is a whopping 4 hours and 55 minutes!
