Musician With Local Ties Announces Bid For US Senate Seat
Country music superstar Garth Brooks’ former sideman, who has family ties to Seminole, is seeking the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Markwayne Mullin.
Ty England, who played rhythm guitar and sang background vocals alongside Brooks before launching a solo career, filed for the post earlier this month. His name will appear as “Gary Ty England” on the ballot.
England’s great uncle, the late Isaac “Wiley” Cook, was a longtime Seminole resident. Cook’s wife, Esta (also known as “Johnny”), worked at Curry-Hardin furniture for many years.
England began playing guitar during his youth. He met Brooks while he was attending Oklahoma State University and the two became roommates. By 1988 Brooks had moved to Nashville, and after landing a recording contract, Brooks called England and asked him to join his band. In 1995, England left Brooks’ band and signed to RCA Records Nashville. His self-titled debut album, released in 1995, produced his first chart single “Should’ve Asked Her Faster.” A second album, Two Ways to Fall, followed in 1996.
In 1999, England signed to Capitol Nashville, the same label to which Brooks was signed at the time. His third album, Highways & Dance Halls was released under the name Tyler England. He did not release another album until 2007’s Alive and Well and Livin’ the Dream.
A special primary election to fill Mullin’s seat is scheduled for June 16, with the general election on Nov. 3.
